The Flower Chamber

The Flower Chamber is a short film (16 minutes long) set in Manchester and telling the story of Namu, a young woman from the Mo Suo community of Yunnan Province, western China.

In the story, she is now living in Manchester, and is faced with a dilemma: should she continue to be true to the customs of her native community, relating to conduct with men who would be lovers, or should she accommodate to the customs of the country she is now living in?

The film was the result of a series of story development workshops, run by Ged Neary, Maria Artiles, and Susannah Wright. Once the story was developed, the workshops then introduced the participants to all the stages involved in the short film-making-process: the story board, the location planning, the camera work, the paper-editing, the film editing, team-building, the rehearsing, the sound work, etc. the whole process lasted from April to September 2005, and the short film is now available as a DVD. It was screened as part of the Exposures Festival at the Cornerhouse, in Manchester, on December 7th, 2005.
